Tarneit growth and development: precinct plans, infrastructure and population forecast

Tarneit had 56,370 residents at the 2021 Census and Wyndham's forecasts have it past 63,000 by 2031. Growth follows the Tarneit North, Tarneit West and Tarneit Plains precinct structure plans, with new town centres, schools, road duplications and West Tarneit Station serving the western estates.

Population and dwellings

56,370 residents at the 2021 Census, projected beyond 63,000 by 2031. Almost all growth is in new detached housing on the northern and western fronts, with townhouses increasing near Tarneit Station and Tarneit Central.

Precinct structure plans

The Victorian Planning Authority's Tarneit North PSP was gazetted in August 2024; Tarneit West and Tarneit Plains follow. They fix the estates, town centres, schools and the arterial grid still being built.

Transport

Tarneit Station opened in June 2015 on the Regional Rail Link with about 1,000 car spaces and is one of the busiest on the Geelong line. West Tarneit Station serves the western estates. Leakes Road, Derrimut Road and Dohertys Road duplications are underway or planned.

Town centres and schools

Tarneit Central (2017) and Wyndham Village (2005) are the established centres, with Riverdale Village and the Tarneit West town centre serving the new estates. The suburb has 14 schools including Baden Powell P-9, Thomas Carr College and Good News Lutheran College.

What growth means for owners

Constant civil works beside existing homes, which is why dilapidation reports are booked here, and estates that mature quickly, which changes drainage, traffic and tree cover around older lots.
